Too many ideas. Not enough places for them.
Every publication we loved had a focus. Every platform wanted a niche. Every algorithm rewarded consistency of subject.
We were not consistent in subject. We were consistent in curiosity.
So in 2023, three writers sat down with too many things they wanted to write about and nowhere that felt right to put them. Commonplace was the answer to that problem.
The brief has never changed. Write about what interests you. Trust that it will interest someone else. Do not let the format get in the way of the writing.
That is still all it is.

Founded in 2023
Three people.
Everything else is the writing.
Commonplace was started by Yara Amin and built with Felix Hartmann and Nadia Sorel. Between them they have lived in seven cities, written about everything from street food to the philosophy of slowness, and have never once agreed on what the best meal they have ever eaten was.

Founder
Yara Amin
Curious about most things and willing to write about all of them. Has been asking the same questions since 2023 and is no closer to answering them, which is exactly the point.

Contributing Writer
Nadia Sorel
Finds the story underneath the story. Usually starts with food and ends up somewhere unexpected.

Contributing Writer
Felix Hartmann
Pays attention to things other people walk past. Believes the most interesting story in any room is usually about the furniture.
Everything Commonplace has become since 2023.

The Commonplace letter
Written for people who still read properly.
We send when we have something worth saying. Which is often enough to be worth signing up for.
